In Search of Clay: Harvest, Make N’ Take
We will harvest natural clay from habitats within the Sanctuary. You will be allowed to create items of your choice (pots, animals, etc.), and take them home with you.

The Red-tailed Hawk is one of North America’s most common and impressive birds of prey. These adaptable hunters thrive in forests, fields, and even cities. These raptors play a vital role in ecosystems by maintaining ecological balance as apex predators. We will attempt to observe them in the Sanctuary. Please bring binoculars.

Celebrate 35 years of The Friends of Read Wildlife Sanctuary, a mostly volunteer organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy a musical performance by Scott Wenzel’s Big Band. Champagne and cake will be served.
Join us for a light lunch during our annual year-in-review session. Discussions will include updates on preservation efforts, sanctuary programs, and membership and financial status. Stay after to celebrate Friends' 35th birthday with music, cake and bubbly!
Observe our feathered friends as they prepare to head south. Please bring binoculars.
We will discuss the biology, habitat, distribution, behavior and social structures of geese, followed by a hike to the wetland areas to observe them.
Continue the beautification of certain foot paths. Great for service credit hours. Please bring work gloves. Hand tools will be provided. Please register by Sunday, August 31.
We will discuss the biological adaptations and behaviors of wild turkeys, followed by an observational hike.
We will discuss ways chipmunks survive in the wild through their biology, behavior and reproductive strategies. We will then observe their behavior in the wild.
These corvids have superb survival skills. We will learn their behavioral, foraging, habitat adaptations, predator and reproductive strategies.
